All buildings, applications and participants in theirs realizations are gaining popularity and prestige among the professional community and the general public through a multitude of communication tools and platform.

Television

The award ceremony of the honorees buildings in the National Contest “Building of the Year” is broadcasted as a television show on Bulgarian National Television (BNT) on Christmas Eve every year.
A video that introduce the candidate buildings featured on the television broadcast “Building of the Year 2021”. The first television broadcast on BNT 1 lasts 90 minutes and is held on December 2021 in the afternoon (you will be informed through the contest site for the exact time) plus re-broadcast on BNT 2 and BNT 4 with worldwide coverage.
The awarded buildings are presented on the television broadcast with the awards of the investor, the architect and the construction company from the respective official or partner of the event.

The television recording and broadcasting rights belong to BNT in its role of producer. The organizer is not entitled to be having an effect on the mode of recording and broadcasting.

Online

The Contest's online media campaign is implemented through a wide range of online platforms of the Organizer and partners and social networks as well.
The main information source of the National Contest “Building of the Year 2021” is the official website of the contest www.buildingoftheyear.bg  / www.sgradanagodinata.bg . Information provided by contestants of the buildings participating in the Contest shall be published in the Contest website - http://www.buildingoftheyear.bg/  in Participants section.
All projects are presented by categories with imported visual materials and information about the project parameters, investor, designer, contractor, constructor and detailed description of the project.

Print

Each building, that take part in the National Contest “Building of the Year 2021”, is present in the special luxury edition “Building of the Year 2021” issue 6 of The CITY magazine. All projects are presented by categories with imported visual materials and information about the project parameters, investor, architect, contractor, constructor and the detailed description of the project.

All completed buildings on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, which have been authorized for use until October 31, 2021 may participate in the Contest in the following categories:

• Office buildings             
• Corporate buildings
• Residential buildings up to 10,000 sq.m. GFA
• Residential buildings over 10,000 sq.m. GFA
• Residential complexes of multi-family buildings
• Hotels and holiday complexes
• Retail buildings
• Industrial and logistics buildings
• Building innovation award (new)
- innovations in the implementation of the building in the field of concept or implementation, and presented building solution - architectural, structural or building system

• Buildings with elements of “green” architecture
• Urban development projects
• Buildings of culture, education and sports
• Audience Building Award

Each building, applying for the Contest, participates in online voting for the Audience Building Award 2019 on the official website of the contest - www.buildingoftheyear.bg, which starts from 1 to 14 of December 2021  by one-time vote for each.

*** According to the specifics of the building, it can participate in up to two categories, after mandatory consultation with the organizers.

Requirements and recommendations for preparation of the applications

The way of presenting the building is very important for its success in the contest "Building of the Year," so it should be pay particular attention to the presentation of visual and textual information on the application.
Please check the correctness of the data because the information will be used and reproduced in all materials of the contest online, print and television to submit the application.
Responsibility for the correctness of the information bears the importer's application.

• High resolution (Print) - images in digital view (300 dpi, minimum 5000 px, CMYK)
   
• Low resolution (Online) - images in digital view (72 dpi, 1800 px max, RGB)
• Numeration of photo material – these photos have to be numbered by the desired arrangement when presenting the building on the website / print / television, starting with the first one (horizontal format).

What the description should include:

• Investment characteristics of the building - up to 2000 characters

Why the building was created - the purpose of the investment, function and customer needs it meets.
Concept and characteristic of the investment intention: total building area, net building area, corresponding to the relevant function of the category in which the application is submitted.

• Architecture, design, functionality - up to 2000 characters

The urban aspect and contribution to the environment in which the building is realized;
Challenges and achievements in the architectural design of the building;
Description of the quality of functional, exterior and interior solutions of the building achieved through the use of relevant modern products and building solutions;
Description of functional allocations on the standard floor;
Description of common parts, facades, roof, underground parking, park area.

• Construction, energy efficiency and technological indicators - up to 2000 characters

Challenges and achievements at the construction performance of the building;
Description of the quality of the exterior and the surrounding space of the building, achieved through the use of relevant modern construction products and building solutions;
Availability of environment and investments in healthy living and living of the building – ecological zones, sports zones, recycling systems, investments in facilities for purification of air, water, waste and etc.;
Copy of the building energy passports (optional) to clarify: building energy consumption, share of renewables, type of equipment, COP factor for winter and summer, etc.;
Information about the degree of building automation, are electric car parking spaces available (how many seats are there, and how many charging stations are available);
Availability of certificates proving the sustainability and quality of the building;

All applicants will receive an electronic confirmation by e-mail after successful submission of the documents. An application received by October 31, 2021, incl., is considered valid. The organizers are not responsible for the accuracy of the submitted information in the registration form for participation in the contest. The documents and materials for participation in the contest remain in the archives of the organizers.
 

Registration Fee

Each applicant pays an application fee of EUR 750 without VAT by 22^th of October 2021 (early registration) and EUR 900 without VAT upon registration after the 22^th October 2021.
Upon receipt of the application, the organizers send the applicant a pro forma invoice, on the basis of which the registration fee is transferred. The registration fee is non-refundable. An application with an unpaid registration fee is not allowed to participate in the contest.

Jury

The building evaluation process is underway by an authoritative jury chaired by a representative designated by the Minister of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works. The jury includes a representative of Directorate for National Building Control, representatives of institutional, professional and academic communities, industry organizations and leading business companies. The jury will start in November 2021 and will run in two stages. In the first stage, three or more nominations for the winner in each category are selected. In the second stage, the nominees select the winners in the respective categories. The final of the jury is a jury meeting to discuss and vote on the prize proposals resulting from the two-stage vote.
The jury has the right to award additional prizes in addition to the winners in the contest categories.
The nominees and winners will be notified by email of the organizers within three days of the final jury vote.

Evaluation Criteria

The main criteria for choosing a winner for the respective category and for special prizes are related to three main aspects:

01Investment Characteristics of the Building and Contribution to the Society and the Urban Environment
Does the building meet the contemporary requirements of the target group for which it is intended. Location, transport security and access, suitable for the particular use, convenience of public and private transport, visibility and representativeness of the building, secured parking spaces, bicycle parking.
Improvements in infrastructure or urban development in the implementation of the building, for example: construction of public infrastructure, improvement of public spaces, creation or improvement of public playgrounds, territories or facilities for sports or recreation, etc.

02 Architecture, design, functionality
What is the urban aspect and contribution to the environment in which the building is realized.
What are the challenges and achievements of the architectural design of the building? Aesthetics, efficiency, ergonomics and quality design of exterior, functional and interior solutions - standard floor, common parts, facades, roof, underground parking, vertical layout and park area.
Quality of functional, exterior and interior solutions of the building, achieved through the use of relevant modern products and building solutions.
Describe the quality of the spaces, which corresponds to the latest trends in the respective habitat category.

03 Construction, energy efficiency and technological indicators
Description the quality of the construction and assembly work performed during the construction of the building. What are the completion works and top-level building systems, top-grade materials, providing durability and easy maintenance of the building over time?
Describe the quality of the exterior and the surrounding space of the building, achieved through the use of relevant modern construction products and building solutions.
Existence of investments in healthy living and living of the building - ecological zones, sports zones, recycling systems, investments in facilities for air, water, waste treatment, etc.
Energy consumption of the building, share of renewable sources.
Degree of building automation, are there parking places for electric cars.
Provide certificates proving the sustainability and quality of the building.

Awards

The participants in the realization of each award-winning building - investor, architect and constructor, according to the Contest regulations, receive a statuette, diploma and rights for using the Building of the Year logo at promotion of the award-winning building.

The author of the statuette for the "Building of the Year" Awards is Petko Moskov (1953-2004), a Bulgarian sculptor known for more than 50 monumental works all over the country. His work “"St. St. Cyrill and Methodius"” was presented to Pope John Paul II on his visit to Bulgaria in 2002.

The award ceremony of the National Contest “Building of the Year” traditionally enjoys huge interest and the presence of the most influential industry representatives - the senior administration, leading investors, architects, builders, representatives of leading commercial companies, bankers, consultants and more.

The Award Ceremony of the National Contest “Building of the Year 2021” will be held on December 15, 2021.

The National Contest “Building of the Year” and partners initiate and support donations related to landmark buildings in Bulgaria.

BOYANA CHURCH - murals restoration 2006 - 2008
The National Contest “Building of the Year” and the general sponsor of Euromarket Construction launched a campaign in 2005 to raise funds for the restoration of the murals of Boyana Church.
The Boyana Church is a medieval Christian temple, built in parts in the 11th, 13th and 19th centuries. The church has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this list, containing about 1000 monuments from all over the world, Boyana Church is one of the seven Bulgarian monuments.
The Boyana Church owes its worldwide fame not to its architecture but to the murals of 1259, painted by an extremely talented artist of the time. Its means of expression are a revolution in European painting, and it is no coincidence that some scholars call it a precursor to the European Renaissance.
The restoration was carried out in 2006 - 2008 by Prof. Grigori Grigorov and the artist restorer Vladimir Tsvetkov. Thanks to the donations of many individuals and companies and the invaluable support of Prof. Bozhidar Dimitrov.

KOLYU FICHETO MUSEUM in Dryanovo - renovation and restoration 2009 - 2011
The 210th anniversary of the birth of the biggest Bulgarian builder - Kolyu Ficheto, was welcomed with the opening of the museum in his hometown Dryanovo, restored at the initiative of the National Contest “Building of the Year”, Dryanovo Municipality and the Bulgarian Construction Chamber.
The museum's miserable condition 40 years after its construction gave rise to the campaign to restore the building during the official ceremony of the eighth edition of the contest in 2009.
In 2011, after a major renovation by the Bulgarian Construction Chamber, the museum opened its doors to the general public.

The applicant for participation in the National Contest "Building of the Year 2021" declares that all copyrights related to the implementation of the project, as well as visual and photographic materials, have been arranged in accordance with the current legislation of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Law copyright and related rights.

The petitioner agrees that the organizer of the contest shall distribute and publicly display (online, print and TV broadcast) in advertising and information materials and events, the description and visual materials, the presentation of the building, a candidate in the National Contest “Building of the Year 2021”.
